  Thinking of becoming a JW.

  hi,.

  i am new to here so please be bear with me.. i have always believed in god, but was never baptised, my parents wanted me to make up my own mind religon wise.. i am thinking of becoming a jw and am just needing some advice on how to do this, bible study and jw beliefs.

  also do jw say grace and how.. i am greatful of any help.. thanks.

  If even a young boy is speaking or leading the prayers, or giving instructions, every sister, even anyone very expeirenced, or very educated, or even his mother, must obey him. Unquestioningly. Following his lead.

  I just had a horrible memory. Wow...kicks me in the teeth. Women should hate me.

  I remember being a baptized kid and going on studies with "sisters" where I was conducting. I slink now at the memory that...I felt so powerful because they had to wear a head covering around me. Isn't that sick? I was 14 years old and they were having to wear a covering to respect my DIVINE authority.

  ...and I liked it. Sick. I feel so horrible about that now. At least I have Zid here to teach me about ancient history, especially as it applies to godess worship. Thanks Zid! Keep it coming! :-)

  It's already been said and I think it deserves to be said again. We cannot prove (in a scientific means, that is) that God exists. Science cannot prove that he doesn't exist. That's the way it is and that's the way it shall always be until we either die...and nothing happens, or we die and something does happen.

  Soooo, if a psychiatrist diagnoses someone with schizophrenia, is the doctor no better, and also schizophrenic?

  Logical fallacy here? Anyone? Belief in God is compared to a physical chemical disease of the brain? As usual, your logic as awesome! I love that people are reading this stuff from you. I'm sure it generates alot of WTF smiles.

  First of all I don't believe that belief in God is a delusion, even if I became an atheist. If I was an evolutionist I would describe it as part of natural selection. It would be a defense mechanism that man sub consciously created to keep it at the top of the food chain. A belief that even in death man was still number 1. Even if I was an atheist I would consider belief in God an important part of human psychology. Man has a spiritual need. It's not mass delusion that keeps man believing in captive, like some atheists believe.

  There are many non believing psychologists that feel that belief in God is a necessary part of human psychology and not a delusion. This delusion idea has been advanced by Dawkins, and other militant atheists like him.

  I guess it's hard for me to come to it at the point of being an atheist because it seems so far from what I actually believe. But, again, I don't think I would view it as a delusion.

  Really? That's where you wanted to go with your comment? Monkeys don't believe in God, so atheism has been around longer? Wow... That may have been one of the most unintelligent arguments I've ever heard. It should go in the best of section.

  Uh, it wasn't a book review. The article was about another topic.

  I didn't say you said it was. It was an article about Darwin and God. And the book was used as a valid argument in the discussion. I'm not finding all the reviewers and articles that say the book is false.

  KS, so you grow old and die. I'm glad you have hope for only a few years at best. I can't imagine knowing that I will become dirt for the trees would be a happy view of the future.

  KS, interesting that the NY times article that you refered to does not completely debunk the books claims. In fact it ends with:

  "No matter how much science can explain, it seems, the real gap that God fills is an emptiness that our big-brained mental architecture interprets as a yearning for the supernatural. The drive to satisfy that yearning, according to both adaptationists and byproduct theorists, might be an inevitable and eternal part of what Atran calls the tragedy of human cognition."

  No where does it claim that we do not have a need for God. Obviously the writer believes it is tragic, but it IS a human need.

  Yeah, many atheists tend to dislike hope. Nice to see you follow suit, KS. Such a happy way to live. No hope. Die at 80 and become dirt. Life may be grand now, but when you get close to that 80 mark, it'll start haunting you. No hope.
